Attractions

  • American Jazz Museum.  "Kansas City, Missouri, the mother of swing and the nurturer of Bebop, proudly hosts the reflection of its dynamic musical heritage - the American Jazz Museum. Inside the American Jazz Museum, the essence and living spirit of jazz legends fill the atmosphere, as the story of jazz and her greatest performers is told through the sights and sounds of one the most interactive museums in the country."
  • Arabia Steamboat Museum.  "The Arabia Steamboat Museum features one of the largest collections of pre-Civil War era goods in the country. The steamboat originally sank to the bottom of the Missouri River in 1856. Over a century later, a portion of the ship and the majority of its 200 tons of cargo were recovered."
  • City Market.  "Looking for that perfect place to spend an exciting Saturday, leisurely Sunday or any other day of the week for that matter? The City Market is home to an eclectic mix of restaurants and market merchants, who offer distinctive gifts, flowers, home accessories and specialty foods from across the world including the Americas, Europe, The Middle and Far East."
  • First Fridays in the Crossroads Art District.  "Nearly 40 art and antique galleries are located along the trendy, mile-wide district."

  • Kansas City Zoo.  "The Kansas City Zoo was established in 1909. There were many additions throughout the years, however a major expansion in 1995 grew the Zoo to more than 200 acres and added a variety of animals to an already diverse collection.

Highlights include five eastern black rhinos, about 1 percent of the entire world population; nearly 20 chimpanzees; kangaroos, including rare tree kangaroos; red pandas; maned wolves; lowland gorillas; orangutans; baboons; a pride of five lions; Masai giraffes; and much more."
  • Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.  "At the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, you will find works by modern and contemporary artists from around the world. Since the Kemper Museum's opening in 1994, its permanent collection has more than tripled. Works in the collection range from those created after the 1913 Armory Show, an important benchmark in modern art, to the present. At the core of the Museum's permanent collection is the Bebe and Crosby Kemper Collection, a gift by the Museum's founder R. Crosby Kemper and his wife Bebe Kemper, and the Kemper Foundations. Visitors to the Kemper Museum discover works in all media by renowned modern and contemporary artists as well as works by emerging artists. Permanent Collection artists include Dale Chihuly, Arthur Dove, Louise Bourgeois, Andrew Wyeth, Fairfield Porter, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Stella, Lesley Dill, Romare Bearden, Christian Boltanski, Robert Mapplethorpe, Garry Winogrand, Kojo Griffin, Jim Hodges, Wayne Thiebaud, and Hung Liu. The Museum rotates its collection on a regular basis, allowing visitors to study and discover new works throughout the year."
  • The Negro Leagues Baseball Museums
  • The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.  "The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is one of the country’s premier art institutions. Its rich collections bring together masterpieces from every culture and period of the world, spanning over 5,000 years. The Museum opened its doors in 1933 as a gift to the community from William Rockhill Nelson (1841-1915), founder of The Kansas City Star. Contributions from the estate of Mary McAfee Atkins (1836-1911) helped complete the building."
  • Starlight Theatre.  "This outdoor theater seats approximately 8,000 people and is located on 14 acres in Swope Park next to the Kansas City Zoo. Starlight Theatre was founded in 1950 and presents Broadway musicals such as the National Tours of Les Misérables, Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA, Miss Saigon, as well as touring self-produced or co-produced productions of such beloved musicals as The Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady, Annie, The Sound of Music, and others..."

Dining

Arthur Bryant's legendary Kansas City BBQ.  "This BBQ legend was founded in the early 1920's, by Charlie Bryant, Arthur's older brother. When Charlie died, Arthur took over and moved the BBQ restaurant to 18th and Brooklyn, just four blocks away from Municipal stadium, the home of the Kansas City Blues, followed by the Kansas City Athletics. Municipal Stadium was also the first home of the Kansas City Chiefs. With the move near to the ball park, it became a nationally known eatery. Major league players ate there and fans would stop in before the games to eat on the premises or take out to the ball park. The fame of Arthur Bryant's grew. Then renowned author Calvin Trillin declared in Playboy magazine that '...the single best restaurant in the world is Arthur Bryant's Barbeque at 18th & Brooklyn in Kansas City.'"  Comment:  More about Arthur Bryant's can be read in Calvin Trillin's Tummy Triology and in his earlier book, American Fried.
