Attractions

  • Governor's Mansion.  "First occupied in 1842, the Mississippi Governor's Mansion is the second oldest continuously occupied governor's residence in the United States. In 1975, it was designated a National Historic Landmark, making it at that time one of only two state gubernatorial residences to receive this honor."
  • Manship House Museum.  "Charles Henry Manship, Civil War mayor of Jackson, was born in Maryland, where he apprenticed to a chair maker and trained as an ornamental painter. Attracted to Jackson in the 1830s by its building boom, he advertised his services as a painter and found work on the construction of the State House, now known as the Old Capitol. Soon he opened a shop of his own, where he sold paints and fine wallpaper."
  • Municipal Art Gallery.  "The Municipal Art Gallery strives to both promote and encourage contemporary artists, and to create a place where everyone can enjoy American and Mississippi art for what it is... a true reflection of our people and our lifestyles."
  • Museum of Natural Science.  "The mission of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is to promote understanding and appreciation of Mississippi's biological diversity through collections, research, scientific data bases, education, and exhibits; and to inspire the people of our state to respect the environment and to preserve natural Mississippi."

  • Old Capitol Museum.
  • Smith Robertson Museum.  "A once in a lifetime opportunity awaits you inside Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center. Located just a stone’s throw from the State Capitol building, its just walking distance of principal businesses and attractions in downtown Jackson. Through art, artifacts and photography, the work, lifestyle and artistic contributions of African Americans are celebrated, evoking a greater under- standing of the African American experience in the Deep South."
  • Mississippi Museum of Art.  "As Mississippi's largest art museum, the Mississippi Museum of Art is home to some very extraordinary works of art. And it's not simply the best in local and regional art that we have on display. Every year, some of the best exhibitions in the nation come to Jackson.

The history of the Museum dates back to 1911, when the Mississippi Art Association was founded to promote the "original work of Mississippi artists, sculptors, writers, craftsmen, and workers in other artistic fields." The first objective of the association was to establish a "permanent and monumental gallery and grounds, wherein the finest examples of the work of Mississippi artists and other artists may be shown, and where collections of art work may be accumulated and preserved."

That mission was achieved with the opening of the Museum in 1978. Come see for yourself today. If it's great art you're looking for, you are sure to find it here."
