Joy America Cafe

Part of the Museum Food Series

Joy America Cafe. American Visionary Art Museum. 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD 21230.  Voice: 410-534-3451.  Fax: 410-244-6363.

The American Visionary Art Museum is Wonderfully weird.  Even their Web site is weird in an enjoyably funny way.  The museum is relatively small and looks as though it might support a small coffee shop.  What the museum does have is, perhaps, the finest museum restaurant in the U.S., the Joy America Cafe.  Joy American is located on the top floor, level 3, of the museum.  The decor of Joy America is eclectic and that too could lead to either right or wrong impressions.  The food is described as eclectic and that too could be good or bad.  The fact that it is on top of a building and offers a great view of Baltimore could also lead those who have been unimpressed with view restaurants astray.  The fact is the food is eclectic in the most wonderful of ways.  At the Joy America Cafe the food is artfully prepared and artistically presented.  Everything brought to the table is an outrageously artistic sculpture.  The food is so beautiful is takes courage to destroy it by eating it.  After the first aromatic taste courage takes over and the food sculptures are quickly dispatched.  It is theater of the stomach.
