Cell Phones and Travel

Staying connected by phone while traveling.

By Max Lent 2011

Yes, you can take it (your cell phone) with you.  But, there are so many choices that you may find yourself over charged and underserved if you are not careful with your research.

Here's what I wanted to do as part of planning a business trip to Venice, Italy and London, UK.

  • Take my cell phone with me to Europe and use a cell phone and data plan while traveling.
  • Provide business contacts in those countries with local mobile phone numbers where I could easily be reached.
  • Use Web-based map tools to provide directions in the countries and cities I visit.
  • Use Web-based travel reviews of restaurants and hotels.
  • Use Web-based travel information

Some of the choices available include:

  • Use my existing cell phone carrier and incur roaming fees while traveling.
  • Purchase a SIM card in the U.S. from an international telephone service provider.
  • Rent or purchase phones with SIM cards within the countires I visit.
  • Purchase SIM cards within the countries I visit.

These seemed like simple enough goals and solutions, but the actual implementation of what I wanted to do became very complicated very quickly as I researched the possibilities.

More to come
