Car Rental International
Overview
Renting an automobile in foreign countries
have significant risks. Renting from a reputable
international agency will decrease these risks to some
degree. Making sure that you are fully insured is
paramount. Reading the contract carefully is very
important. There have been many horror stories
published about travelers driving their rental cars across
borders in Europe, losing their car keys, and being
subjected to exorbitant fees in getting their rentals
returned. Driving in third world countries and even
some European countries can be extremely hazardous,
especially at night. Not knowing the local customs
about assuming right-of-way on narrow roads can be deadly.
If possible, it is safer and more enjoyable to hire a car
and a driver. In some countries highway robberies are
commonplace. Inquire before you go. Renting
motor scooters or motorcycles is much more dangerous than
renting cars.
International drivers licenses advertised on
the Web are scams. There is no such legal license.
Read the article "Ads
for International Drivers' Licenses or Permits Could Be a
Dead End" from the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC). What you will want to get
is an International Driving Permit which is available from
automobile clubs like the
American Automobile Club (AAA) and the
National Automobile Club. Visit the
U.S. Department of State Web page for additional
information. Also read the
U.S. Department of State Web page on Road Safety when
planning your trip.
