It is impossible to discuss groceries, gourmet food, or exotic ingredients in the context of Rochester, NY without mentioning Wegmans.  Wegmans may be the finest supermarket in the U.S. and possibly the world. However hard Wegmans tries to meet the needs of all grocery shoppers it will never succeed. There will always be a need for specialty gourmet food shops, bakeries, ice cream shops, butchers and more.

Lombardi's Gourmet Imports and Specialties is a gem of a gourmet extravagance hidden away in the village of Fairport, NY.

If you have ever found yourself standing in front of the olive oil shelf of a Wegmans or, less likely, Tops markets wishing for more variety or something special to purchase as a gift for a gourmet friend, you need to shop at Lombardi's. They have ultra high quality olive oil brands that you or, even better, your friend have never seen. These olive oils come in a wide range of artistically shaped containers in a range of prices.

Olive oils are just the tip of the iceberg and just an example of range of selection you will find at Lombardi's. Their selection of pasta is the most extensive I have seen in the region. They have multi-colored, multi-flavored pasta in numerous colors and shapes. If you enjoy cooking pasta, you won't be able to resist taking some one home with you.

If you take pride in having a dinner guests saying that they hadn't seen a cheese like the one you are serving at Wegmans, Lombardi's cheese counter will thrill you. The selection and the quality of their cheeses, like everything else they sell, extensive.

Gourmet cooks should schedule at least an hour at Lombardi's just create a visual inventory of the huge range of products on their shelves.

In addition to gourmet foods, Lombardi's offers gourmet advice. If you need help finding something, just ask. Their staff knows their merchandise. They also know about gourmet cooking.

If you are biking along the Erie Canal in Fairport, Lombardi's is just a few blocks to the north of the canal. However, plan ahead and put panniers on your bike. It is nearly impossible leave Lombardi's without a couple bags of goodies.

If you like biking European style, plan on purchasing some meats, cheeses, and bread at Lombardi's to make a canal side lunch. Yum.
