Search tools

  • Search4i.  Search4i.com is a search engine with excellent coverage of Indian subject matter.

  • SearchIndia.com.  A search engine specifically for India.  This is a great starting point for looking for information about anything India.  It includes a wide range of topics, but it is not definitive.  Many of the links listed here do not show up on SearchIndia.com.

News

  • IndiaExpress.com.  IndiaExpress.com is a very cleanly designed Web site with news stories about India.

Religion

Streaming multimedia content

  • All India Radio.  This station is government run and has a wide variety of content including news, music, drama, poetry, and more.

  • Canadian International Tamil Radio.

  • Carnatic Corner.  An extensive list of links to online Carnatic music.  My favorite.

  • IndiaFM.  This online radio station has a wide selection of Indian music and Indian music streaming videos.  The user interface is not intuitive so explore the choices carefully.  For example using the radio turner requires moving a slider that is nearly invisible.

  • MP3 Indian traditional music.  The MP3 collection is enjoyable to listen to although their server frequently suffers from net congestion.

  • NDTV.  MSNBC for India.  This Web site has live video feeds from India.

  • The New Millennium Television For International Asians.  This is a new Web site that look promising.  They have streaming video and audio.  One unique aspect is their video recipes. Fee based.

  • RadioofIndia.com.  Slick player, but intrusive opening advertisment.

  • Sikhnet.  "Connecting Sikhs world wide."

Telephony

Telephone calling cards

Calling India by phone is difficult at best.  The lines are frequently clogged with callers so calls don't get through.  Once connected the quality of service is poor.  There are often delays in the conversation.  Getting cut off is common.  For this, the cost of calling India is higher than for almost any other country.  My experience is that calling cards help reduce the cost.  I have used the services below and I am generally satisfied with them.

  • AT&T International.  Using cards purchased at Sam's Clubs I have had good success in getting through to India and the cost is competitive.  Bear in mind that a 1,000 minute card designed for calling in the U.S. will not provide you with same amount of time for calls to India.

  • Devicomm.  Low rates.

Tourism

Electronic greeting cards

Art

  • The Berger Foundation-Indian Art.  This is one of the best collections of images of Indian art I have seen on the Web.  The depth and breadth of the content is spectacular.  There is little or no text associated with the images, but they are identified by location.

  • Taj Mahal.  Produced by Armchair Travel Company Ltd. London.  The best online imagery regarding the Taj Mahal on the Web.

Culture

  • Hindustan. "A global network of people of Indian origin."

  • Indian Culture Online.  An excellent site with a great deal of information.

  • Indian Heritage.  This site has a great deal of textual information.  It almost devoid of multimedia.
